Milly Zantow was a Wisconsin native who was determined to make plastic recycling possible in the late 1970's. She researched different kinds of plastics, learned how to identify them, and convinced manufacturers of the value of using recycled plastic. The recycling methods practiced at her own E-Z Recycling Center in Wisconsin were adopted by the Environmental Protection Agency and the numbering system she developed became the worldwide industry standard when the Society of the Plastics Industry adopted it in 1988.
